Humans of LoLo: Brittney Johnstone

This weeks Humans of LoLo features the always energetic Brittney Johnstone. Brittney is being featured due to her energy every time she steps into CrossFit LoLo. She is always ready to work hard and learn new skills, often spending 2-3 hours here doing the different classes and extra work, or just straight socializing.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

“I’ve been at LoLo since the beginning. After meeting Kelsey and then Adam, I was introduced to CrossFit for the first time. I had some misconceptions about it but after trying it out, I found that it includes lots of different elements like gymnastics, weightlifting and functional movement.

As a child I found it really challenging to keep up in school as I had asthma. I never envisioned myself actually doing a fitness competition, let alone coming in first place in our division in my recent first CrossFit competition at the CanWest Games. To say I am very proud of myself and my team (The LoLo PowerPuff Girls – Kelsey and Joyce) is an understatement – I’m still on a high I think!

Most people think CrossFit is very intense, “I don’t want to go in there and smash weights around get bulky etc” but in fact it has not been like that. Everyday we learn a new skill and put it into practice.”

How often do you attend CrossFit LoLo?

“I’ve been 5 days a week – I feel stronger, healthier and fitter. Gaining overall happiness has been the best part. I would pay just to be part of the community, the people here are super nice and encouraging. I tell all my friends to join because it really is special here.”

What has been the hardest part of your life thus far?

“I think one of the hardest moments in my life is probably happening right now. I’m not inspired in my current job, I don’t feel that I am having the impact on the world that I know I can have.

The good thing that will come from this is that it will force me to make a positive change. I feel that change is coming!”

What has been the happiest moment in your life thus far?

“Happiest moment – the moment I got off a plane in Thailand and didn’t have to work (laughs). Experiencing different food ,cultures and countries and of course, any live music concert. I love a good dance party! Especially if it’s got a good beat, any music goes.

Are you afraid of anything?

“I’m most afraid of being hungry, ever. I don’t know where it comes from but I’m always worried about being hungry.

What are you most excited about?

“Figuring out my path in life. I’ve been at a crossroads career-wise for awhile now and I’m ready to open up to a new journey. I know I’m aligned with who I want to be when I’m able to leave someone feeling encouraged and supported. I’m here to just listen.”

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

“For most influential, I can’t pinpoint any one person. I believe that you learn something from every person in your life, whether it be in a 2 second meeting or a life long relationship.”
